Community Summary - Early Development Instrument (EDI)

The Human Early Learning Partnership (HELP) collaborates with academic, government, school, and community partners to gather data and report on child well-being in British Columbia. In 1999, HELP began collecting and mapping population level child development data province-wide using the Early Development Instrument (EDI). The EDI data provide communities and policy makers with the information they need to monitor children’s development, and to develop effective program and policy responses that will help B.C.’s children and families thrive.

Wave 5 (2011/12 - 2012/13)

Young Mothers Project

In South Vancouver Island the areas of WestShore, Sooke and Port Renfrew continue to grow in population, particularly with young families. One specific group that presents with unique social service and education needs is that of adolescent and young women who are pregnant and parenting, and their partners and families.

Salt Spring Island Play Tour

The Early Years Play Tour is a community initiative organized by the Coalition for Children and Families of the Southern Gulf Islands. This event is an opportunity for families to learn about different local, licensed child care centres, and programs for families on Salt Spring Island. Families pick up a map to the centres on the tour in the morning, sampling different programs to get a sense of what best fits their familys needs. They will also receive a Family Resource Guide that contains information about the various early childhood centres in the community.
