The Importance of Early Childhood Development
The importance of the early years cannot be overstated. Children are
like fresh clay during the first six years of their lives. They are
malleable and porous, absorbing rapidly and shaped easily by their
surroundings, but as they grow, this capacity diminishes -- so by the
time they are five, many of their character patterns are already
established.
If you wish to make a meaningful difference in a child’s life, the time to act is now, while we can make the greatest difference. Experiences in the early years affect an individuals lifelong health and well-being. Timing is critical. When children receive the right nurturing and care, the results can be tremendous. As these children grow into teens they are less likely to -- drop out of school, abuse drugs, have health problems or engage in criminal activities! The greatest investment we can make is an investment in the life of a child. It is an investment in our future and our children’s future. Not only is it ethically astute to nurture our children -- but it’s a prudent financial investment as well. For every dollar invested in Early Childhood Development at least two dollars are saved in later social costs. If that dollar is invested in high-risk kids, we can witness a future financial savings of up to $7 for every dollar invested. Our children matter. They represent our future work force, leaders, neighbors and care givers. |
